World Post Day


                                                         Today is the "World Post Day".

World Post Day, which falls on 9 October, in every year celebrates the Anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. World Post Day was declared by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo in 1969.

Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations organized to mark the day. The Posts in many countries use the event to introduce or promote new postal products and services. This time the theme for 2012: is. 

                                             "a new strategy for a new world."

The purpose of the World Post Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people's and businesses' everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries. Every year , more than 150 countries celebrate World Post Day in a variety of ways.   

For this year, our Ministry of Posts and Postal Department  organized a World Post Day Stamp Exhibition in Postal Headquarters from October 6th  to 10th, to commemorate the 138th Anniversary of World Postal Day.

A series of events have been organized in Sri Lanka for  National Post Day ceremony at the Sir Lanka Foundation Institute presided over by Minister Jeewan Kumaratunge including a special bicycle race with 250 postmen on 09th. The Postal Authorities have issued a new set of stamps depicting flowers of Sri Lanka to mark the World Post Day and public could purchase rare stamps at the exhibition.
